A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction
Pride Aside is one Father’s attempt to be vocal about his
son’s addiction, and how their family has navigated this
perilous journey together.
“Raw, brutally transparent, real, heart-wrenching,
inspiring, relatable, frustrating, unsettling,
“A gift of unsettled but secure
promise to those who are struggling
along the broken road called life.”
Dr. Rob Futral, Senior Pastor
Broadmoor Baptist Church, Madison MS
On May 20, 2014 Steve and Joni Hutton took their son, Ben, to Teen Challenge of the Dakotas in Brookings, SD. On May 23, Steve found himself with three spare hours to end his Friday afternoon. In the five long years in dealing with their son’s addiction, it was rare to find three spare hours to do anything. He decided to write…to journal. And the words flooded out. 15 days later, and 67,000 words later, a book seemed to have been written, but there was no title. It wasn’t until reading his own book that the words Pride Aside seemed to jump off the pages.
“I think I cried more during that 15 days than I had in the past five years combined. I never had time…or I never took time. Writing Pride Aside was the most spiritual experience I have ever encountered. I don’t recall writing much of what I wrote. I didn’t have an outline–I just wrote. The words somehow naturally came out in chapter form. I didn’t plan the next chapter–I just wrote. I foreshadowed things in early chapters that played out in later chapters, but I don’t recall planning that–I just wrote.”
